Lake Manyara and the Rift Valley landscape in northern Tanzania · Photo credit ↗A Tarangire safari leads into three nights at Lake Natron and a demanding guided volcano ascent attempt. Preparation, recovery time and a final Arusha night are built into the route.
Ideal for For fit adults with recent experience of long, steep hikes and descents. This is a strenuous volcano trek, not a gentle safari add-on.
Dates require a current climb-access and weather check. Drier conditions are preferable, but no season guarantees safe ascent.
One Tarangire safari day; Natron arrival, preparation and climb days; return to Arusha on Day 6; departure on Day 7. No Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater visit. Three Natron room nights are retained even during the overnight climb.
Private road safari with locally guided activities where listed
Arrival and the final travel day are included in the trip length. Driving times are planning guides; weather, roads and formalities can change the day.
Day 1
Meet your Boker Adventures representative at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel. Rest after your flight; no safari or cultural visit is scheduled today. Your briefing covers the route, daily timings, meals, medical or mobility needs, wildlife etiquette and any booked extras. Late arrivals receive their briefing the following morning.
Planning time: JRO to hotel: approximately 1-1.5 hours, depending on traffic and hotel location. Late dinner must be arranged in advance.
Day 2
Depart Arusha for Tarangire, enjoy a game drive and picnic lunch, then continue to your lodge around Mto wa Mbu or the Manyara escarpment. Look for elephants, plains wildlife and birds. Enjoy an early evening before tomorrow's drive to Lake Natron.
Planning time: Arusha to Tarangire: about 2-3 hours; park exit to the Manyara area: roughly 1-2 hours, longer for some lodges.
Day 3
Drive north through the Rift Valley to Lake Natron, stopping for views and lunch. The final approach can be rough and dusty. Reach your lodge, meet the local activity guide and rest during the heat. Enjoy views towards Ol Doinyo Lengai, also written Ol Doinyo Lengai, when conditions are clear.
Planning time: Allow about 3.5-5 hours from the Mto wa Mbu area, with longer travel possible after rain or from an escarpment lodge. No summit climb today.
Day 4
Take a short, easy guided walk in the cooler morning, then rest. Meet the specialist climb guide to review current volcanic and weather conditions, fitness, route access, equipment, drinking water, communications, evacuation arrangements and a turnaround plan. Eat early and sleep before the late-night wake-up. The climb begins only if the local team clears it to proceed.
Planning time: No long gorge walk or strenuous extra activity today. A wake-up around 23:30 may start the climb sequence leading into Day 5; exact timing comes from the guide.
Day 5
Transfer to the trailhead and attempt the guided night ascent, with steep, loose terrain and a long descent. Sunrise views are possible in clear conditions, but access to the summit depends on safety and the guide's decision. Turn back if conditions or fitness require it. Return to camp for food, washing and recovery; there is no onward drive or afternoon tour.
Planning time: Plan around 12-14 hours for the complete overnight outing, sometimes longer. The retained camp room is available on return. Access or weather can cancel the climb; a gentle local activity replaces it where feasible.
Day 6
After breakfast, drive back to Arusha with lunch and comfort stops. Check into your hotel and enjoy a quiet evening. Keeping the final night in town separates the remote-road return from your flight and gives you another chance to recover after the climb.
Planning time: Allow roughly 6-8 hours from Natron, and longer in adverse conditions. No other major activity is scheduled.
Day 7
Enjoy breakfast and transfer to JRO according to your confirmed flight. Lunch is included or packed if timing permits; an early departure requires prior meal arrangements. No sightseeing is scheduled. Your six-night programme ends at the airport.
Planning time: Arusha to JRO: about 1-1.5 hours plus airline check-in time. Hotel checkout applies; late checkout or a day room costs extra.
