Journey reference: NDUTU-CALVING
Savannah and acacia trees in Serengeti National Park · Photo credit ↗Explore Tarangire and Central Serengeti before spending two nights in Ndutu during the January-to-March calving season. Finish with the crater and a Karatu night before your return transfer.
Ideal for Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers who enjoy patient viewing
January-March; exact dates depend on camp operation and herd movements
Arrival and departure are included in the total duration. Transfer days allow less time for wildlife viewing.
Private road safari with mid-range or luxury accommodation
Arrival and the final travel day are included in the trip length. Driving times are planning guides; weather, roads and formalities can change the day.
Day 1
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, meet your Boker Adventures representative and transfer to your Arusha hotel. Settle in and rest after your journey. There are no scheduled safari activities today. At your briefing, discuss the route, daily departure times, dietary needs, road conditions, wildlife etiquette and any booked extras. For a late arrival, the briefing takes place before departure the following morning. Tell us your flight details before confirmation so the transfer and check-in can be arranged.
Transfer estimate: 1-1.5 hours from JRO, depending on the hotel and traffic. Late meals depend on hotel arrangements.
Day 2
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire and begin your first game drive. Follow permitted tracks through woodland and open country, pausing to observe wildlife rather than racing between sightings. Look for elephants, giraffes, antelope and birdlife; your guide will choose the route according to current conditions. Take a picnic lunch at a designated site, then continue wildlife viewing before leaving for Karatu. Arrive for dinner and an overnight stay in the highlands. This day combines park exploration with travel, rather than a full day entirely inside the park.
Transfer estimates: Arusha to Tarangire 2-3 hours; park exit to Karatu 1.5-2.5 hours, excluding game drives and stops.
Day 3
Leave after breakfast and travel through the Ngorongoro highlands towards Central Serengeti. Pause for views and comfort stops where practical. The crater visit is reserved for Day 7, allowing today to focus on the journey rather than combining two major activities. Enjoy a packed lunch en route. After entering Serengeti, continue towards your camp with wildlife viewing as time allows. Settle in before dinner. Your guide may shorten the afternoon drive if road conditions or gate formalities delay the journey.
Allow approximately 5-7 hours for the journey, including normal stops and formalities; extended sightings can add time. This is one of the longer travel days.
Day 4
Spend the day exploring the Seronera area with your guide. Search the grasslands, rocky outcrops and river corridors for wildlife, allowing time to watch behaviour and take photographs. Lions, leopards and cheetahs may be encountered, alongside the resident plains animals. Choose with your guide between a longer outing with a picnic lunch or morning and afternoon drives with a camp break, where distances permit. Stay at the same camp tonight, with no packing or long transfer required. Optional add-on: a sunrise balloon safari can replace the early game drive. Rejoin your guide after the balloon breakfast and continue the day at a comfortable pace. It is an extra-cost activity, subject to availability and weather.
Day 5
After breakfast, make your way south towards the Ndutu area. Enjoy selected wildlife stops along the route, with a picnic lunch or lunch at camp depending on the day's timing. The aim is to reach your migration base with time to settle in. Later, head out to explore nearby grasslands and woodland if time and conditions allow. Your guide will respond to recent sightings and the location of the herds. Ndutu lies within the wider southern Serengeti ecosystem, spanning areas managed under different authorities; access depends on the booked camp and permits.
Planning estimate: 3-5 hours between camps with normal stops; seasonal camp locations and wildlife viewing can change this substantially.
Day 6
Dedicate today to the southern migration area. Set out early to search for wildebeest and zebra herds, following your guide's assessment of rain, grazing and recent animal movements. During the calving period, you may encounter newborn calves and the predators drawn to the plains. Spend time watching the herds rather than trying to cover every corner of the region. Enjoy a picnic lunch on a longer outing, or return for a camp break if the sightings are close enough. Your second night at the same camp gives you a full day without relocating. Animals determine the experience. A birth, hunt or large herd gathering is never scheduled or guaranteed. Vehicles remain at respectful distances and follow the rules of each conservation area.
Day 7
Depart Ndutu early with a packed breakfast or after an early camp breakfast, according to the confirmed location. Travel towards the crater, complete formalities and descend for your scheduled crater game drive. Explore its contrasting habitats with your guide and pause for a picnic lunch at a designated site. Look for plains wildlife and birds, with the possibility of lion, elephant or black rhino sightings. After your visit, ascend and continue to your Karatu lodge for dinner. There is no airport connection today.
Day 8
Enjoy breakfast before driving towards Arusha. Lunch is included, arranged in Arusha or as a packed meal according to your departure plan. Continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your agreed onward flight, or finish at an Arusha hotel if extending your stay.
Allow approximately 3-4 hours to Arusha, or 4-5 hours to JRO, plus any meal stops and flight check-in buffer. Send your flight details before booking: early departures may require an extra Arusha night and a revised quotation. No same-day flight connection is guaranteed before review.
These are alternatives from the itinerary, not a reservation. We confirm the property, room and meal plan for each stop in your quote. Upgrades can change the budget.
